The Wahi Family Story: Four Generations of Rug Making

The Wahi Family Story: Four Generations of Rug Making

Our Story

Most rug companies talk about craftsmanship in the abstract. Ours is a specific, traceable history: four generations, one city of origin, and a single family name that still appears on every collection we sell.

VARANASI

Where it began

The Wahi family's work in handmade rugs traces back to Varanasi, India — a city with a centuries-old reputation for textile weaving and artistry. It was there, in a workshop that carried the scent of raw wool and natural dye, that the family's rug-making tradition took root.

Hand-knotting, natural dyeing, washing, restoring fine wool and silk rugs — skills passed down as a way of life rather than a trade learned from a manual.

Four generations, in brief

1980

The Wahi family rug business formally takes shape. Two decades of building relationships with weaving communities and refining the knowledge that would define the company.

2002

Adi Wahi brings the family's expertise to North America, opening a first wholesale warehouse before expanding into retail.

Today

Fine Rug Store by Wahi operates from Norfolk, Virginia — a retail showroom, hand-wash cleaning, and restoration and appraisal work, not just new sales.

1980

A family business takes shape

1980 marks the formal starting point. For the next two decades the family built relationships with weaving communities and refined the knowledge that still defines the company: how to judge a rug's knot density, how natural dyes age differently from synthetic ones, and how construction determines whether a rug lasts one decade or five.

2002

Crossing the ocean

In 2002, Adi Wahi brought this generations-old expertise to North America, opening his first wholesale rug warehouse before expanding into retail. The goal was straightforward: connect homeowners, interior designers and collectors directly with authentic handmade rugs, cutting out the layers of markup and misinformation that make rug shopping confusing for most buyers.

NORFOLK, VIRGINIA

Where we are today

That expansion is why Fine Rug Store by Wahi now operates out of Norfolk, Virginia, serving as Hampton Roads' destination for hand-knotted rugs — with a retail showroom, hand-wash cleaning services, and restoration and appraisal work for existing rug owners, not just new sales.

Adi Wahi and the team still handle repair, cleaning and authentication for rugs that didn't come from our own inventory. Four generations of hands-on experience doesn't stop being useful just because a rug was purchased elsewhere.

SOURCING

Where our rugs actually come from

Our catalog is sourced through weaving relationships in several regions, each known for particular strengths:

  • Jaipur, India — fine wool-silk Persian reproductions.
  • Khamaria, India — traditional hand-knotting at scale.
  • Kathmandu, Nepal — Tibetan-technique high-low pile construction.
  • Lahore, Pakistan — traditional Oushak and tribal patterns.

When you see a rug on our site with a specific origin listed — India, Afghanistan, Nepal, Turkey — that reflects where that individual piece was actually woven, not a generic label. It's the same principle we cover in our guide to spotting a genuine hand-knotted rug: design tradition and country of weaving are two separate facts, and both belong in an honest listing.

WHY IT MATTERS

What four generations buys you

A hand-knotted rug is a strange thing to buy online. You're trusting a photograph to represent months of a weaver's labour, and trusting a seller's description of “knot density” or “natural dye” without verifying it in person.

Four generations in this specific trade means we're not guessing at what separates a well-made rug from a poor one. It's the same judgment the family has been making since that workshop in Varanasi — now applied to a much larger catalog and a website instead of a single storefront.
