Q1 🏆 Why Shop With Us?
When we say our price and quality are unmatchable, we mean it. We import 100% of our handmade rugs directly from overseas producers, eliminating all middlemen. We are able to give you the best quality for a given price — it is more like buying Factory Direct. Our experts are deeply involved in designing, developing and producing high-quality rugs that go with the trend. You get the latest styles and colors much before the competition can offer. A sizable part of our operations is through the wholesale channel — we supply rugs to other retailers nationwide. To meet this demand, we receive overseas shipments every alternate month, so our inventory is perpetually rejuvenated with the latest patterns, colors and styles throughout the year. Our philosophy of cutting overheads and frills that do not add value to the product has served us both well. We pass on these savings directly to our customers, giving them the best value for their money.
Q2 🧵 Why Should I Buy a Hand-Knotted Rug?
Hand-knotted rugs are the cream of the crop when it comes to area rugs and carpets. A skilled weaver individually ties every single knot to create intricate patterns and designs. An average weaver can weave about 10,000 knots in an eight-hour day — depending on the rug size and design intricacy, weaving a hand-knotted rug takes between 30 days and 8 years. High Durability: The fibers are tightly tied and woven to each other. This careful construction preserves quality — they do not get pulled out easily, unlike machine-made rugs that are prone to ripping over time. Timeless: A traditional hand-knotted rug is a classic, timeless interior décor proven to last for years without going out of style — adapting to traditional, contemporary or modern homes alike. Eco Friendly: Made from natural fibers such as wool and silk — recyclable, biodegradable and eco-friendly. Woven without machines or electricity, and no chemicals are used in the making of our rugs.
Q3 💎 How Does Rug Quality Affect Rug Price?
For hand-knotted rugs, quality depends on factors like knot count (knots per 1"×1" square), pattern intricacy, quality of wool or silk used, number of colors involved, and more. The higher these values, the higher the quality and price. In fine rugs, labor alone may be 75–85% of the cost, with raw materials at 15–20% and the rest covering finishing, shipping and overhead. Other factors that significantly affect quality and price include:
  • Wool being hand-spun vs mill-spun
  • Dyes used — synthetic or vegetable
  • Type of wash or finish (Herbal, Tea-wash, Antique, etc.)
  • Whether the rug is commercial or tribal
  • Exotic origin or limited supply
  • Country or region of origin
Like any work of art, there is no simple yardstick. This is why we recommend shopping at well-established, trustworthy places — and we stand behind every rug we sell.
Q4 🔍 What Is the Difference Between Hand-Knotted, Hand-Tufted and Machine-Made Rugs?
Hand-Knotted (Oriental Rug): A completely handmade rug on a specialized loom with piles knotted individually. These rugs often last over 100 years. Easy check: if you can see the pattern clearly on the back, it is likely hand-knotted. The back will show natural imperfections and irregularities, while fringes are part of the rug itself — actual warp threads extending beyond the pile edge. Hand-Tufted: Made by pushing wool through a canvas backing with a tufting gun, then glued. Also categorized as "handmade" but faster to produce and less durable than hand-knotted. Machine-Made: The back will be very uniform and perfect. Side edges are smooth and refined. Fringes are sewn onto the rug ends rather than being part of the weave. The back is generally rougher than a handmade rug.
Q5 🪡 What Are the Differences in Fibers Used in Rug Making?
Most hand-knotted rugs have a wool pile and cotton foundation. Some rugs have wool or silk in both pile and foundation and tend to be more expensive.
  • Wool pile rugs: More durable, stain-resistant, easier to maintain and clean
  • Silk rugs: Lustrous and ultra-fine — require dry cleaning and exceptional care
  • Machine-made rugs: Mostly synthetic pile (Nylon, Polyester, Acrylic) — some made with wool pile at higher cost
  • Flat-weaves: Generally wool, but also cotton, jute, sisal
Q6 🟫 What Is the Difference Between Pile Rugs and Flat-Weave Rugs?
Pile Rugs have pile or nap on the face, generally knotted to foundation threads (hand-knotted) or anchored by adhesives (hand-tufted). They are thicker, softer underfoot and warmer. Flat-Weave Rugs (Kilims, Dhurries, Soumak) have no pile and are woven like a cloth, or made by embroidering, needling or hooking decorative threads onto a backing. They are thinner, reversible, lighter weight and easier to fold and store. The pattern is visible from both sides.
Q7 What Are Acceptable 'Defects' in Rugs?
Unlike machine-made products, hand-knotted rugs will always have some minor imperfections — and that is exactly what makes them distinct, more valuable and much sought-after. Examples include: slightly uneven edges, uneven knots at the back, or slightly different-color bands in the ground or border color (known as 'Abrash'). Abrash is actually intentionally replicated in modern rugs to achieve an antique look. Unless imperfections are excessive and undermine the character of the rug, they are not only acceptable but desirable. Use your judgment or consult our experienced team.
Q8 💡 Why Are Hand-Knotted Rugs Dark From One Side and Lighter From Another?
All hand-knotted rugs look darker from one side and lighter from the other because the pile is not standing vertically but is inclined towards one side. The side to which it is pointing will appear darker. This gives you a wonderful option — you can place the rug in either direction depending on whether you want it to look darker or lighter in your space. Simply rotate the rug 180° to change the look.
Q9 🏺 What Is the Meaning of Oriental Rug Pattern Names?
Names like Kashan, Sarouk, Heriz, Bokhara and others generally relate to the city, town or region where that pattern or weave style originated. However, this geographic association is no longer strictly valid today — a typical Kashan pattern can come from India, China, Pakistan or beyond. The name now primarily refers to the style of the pattern rather than its country of production. Our team can explain the origins and characteristics of any pattern in our 20,000+ collection.
Q10 📐 What Size Rug Do I Buy for a Dining Room?
As a general guideline:
  • 10'×14' rug works for a dining room that seats 8 people
  • 9'×12' suffices for a dining room that seats 6 people
The rule of thumb is that all chairs should remain on the rug even when pulled out from the table. We carry all sizes in stock and ready to ship. Call 888-703-0590 for personalized size guidance.
Q11 💧 How Do I Clean a Spill on My Hand-Knotted Rug?
Act immediately — the faster you respond, the better.
  • Dilute the spill with plenty of water immediately
  • Blot from the edge of the spill towards the center — never rub
  • For solid spills, carefully scoop up material with a spoon
Wool & Cotton Rugs: Place an absorbent cloth and spot-dry to remove excess liquid. Clean with soft detergent mixed with water. Do not use oxalic acid cleaners — they can remove rug colors. Dry quickly using a towel. Do not use heat. For color spills, sprinkle baking soda or salt, wait a few minutes, then vacuum using suction only (not the vacuum bars). Silk Rugs: Require exceptional care — always dry clean only. Call us at 888-703-0590 for any rug cleaning questions.
Q12 🔧 How Do I Repair a Damaged Rug?
Just about any rug damage has a solution with professional restoration. We can help with your restoration needs including:
  • Minor to large holes
  • Fringe repair and replacement
  • Mending and reweaving
  • Antique rug restoration
Call us at (888) 703-0590 and we will assist at very fair prices. We take pride in our craft and can ensure quality, professional repair. An oriental rug gains value over the years if it remains in good condition — it is not uncommon for hand-knotted rugs to become high-priced auction items. This is only possible with good care.
Q13 🧹 How Often Should I Vacuum My Rug?
Oriental rugs, like most carpeting, should be vacuumed regularly to remove dirt and restore life to the fibers. Avoid vacuuming the fringe.
  • Vacuuming: Once a week is recommended
  • Professional cleaning: Every 3–5 years depending on foot traffic
Call us at 888-703-0590 and we can help you professionally clean your rug.
Q14 🎨 What Is an Overdyed Rug?
Overdyed rugs feature saturated, richly colored palettes achieved through specialized dyeing and bleaching procedures that create a highly enriched color scheme. The colors are wisely selected to suit the woolen texture of rugs. Overdyed rugs come in both hand-knotted and hand-woven forms and have added a contemporary look to modern interiors — moving away from traditional pastel monotony to brighter, more captivating colors. They work beautifully in living rooms, dining rooms, kitchens, sitting lounges and study rooms. Browse our overdyed collection at finerugstore.com.
Q15 🌬️ Do Rugs Reduce Indoor Air Quality?
No — extensive technological assessment of materials used in rug manufacture shows that rug emissions present no significant health risk. Dirt and dust trapped in a rug can be effectively removed through vacuuming without impairing Indoor Air Quality (IAQ). The common misconception stems from adhesives and synthetics in wall-to-wall carpeting that leach chemicals — not from hand-knotted rugs. In fact, thick pile wool rugs are known to improve air quality by trapping common contaminants like Nitrogen Dioxide and Sulphur Dioxide and preventing them from escaping into the surrounding air.
Q16 🔬 Do Dust Mites Grow in Rugs?
Mites and mold only exist in places with excessive moisture. By eliminating sources of excessive moisture and controlling humidity, you can reduce the development of allergens. Simple prevention tips:
  • Vacuum regularly
  • Dry your rug under the sun periodically
  • Keep humidity levels controlled indoors
Did you know? Seagrass natural rugs are highly water-resistant, making them naturally less prone to mites and mold growth.
Q17 🫁 I Have Asthma and Allergies — Can I Buy a Rug?
Yes — research actually supports the opposite of what many people believe. The Swedish Institute of Fiber and Polymer Research concluded that carpets and rugs have nothing to do with causing asthma or allergies. In fact, while carpet use in Sweden steadily decreased since 1975, allergic reactions in the population increased. Some statistical studies indicate that adequately vacuumed carpets are known to reduce asthma symptoms.
  • Hand-woven rugs are the least likely to induce allergic reactions
  • Plant-based fibers from bamboo, jute or coir present no allergy risks unlike synthetic carpets
  • Wool is naturally hygienic, non-allergenic and deters bacteria and dust mites
Q18 🌿 What Are Vegetable Dyed Rugs?
Vegetable dyed rugs use natural dyes derived from plants — the three most commonly used are indigo (dark navy blue), madder (dark rusty red) and larkspur (muted gold). Important note: while vegetable dyes are considered traditional and desirable, they can actually be more corrosive to wool than synthetic dyes, causing faster wear. For example, vegetable black used in some Turkish and Baloch rugs can completely wear away while other colors remain thick and full. Synthetic dyes were introduced to weaving areas between 1875 and 1890. So an old rug does not necessarily mean it is vegetable dyed. In the past 20 years, there has been a large influx of new vegetable dyed rugs on the market.
Q19 🐑 What Are the Advantages of Wool Rugs?
Healthy Choice: Wool is a natural, hygienic, non-allergenic material. It has no harmful gasses and deters the growth of bacteria and dust mites. Excellent for people with asthma thanks to its natural filtering ability. Flame Resistant: Wool carpets are naturally flame resistant and can self-extinguish — the upper pile forms a thick insulating char layer that inhibits fire. Wool will not melt on contact with heat. Long Lasting: Wool's natural strength and ability to withstand heavy foot traffic means it keeps its luxurious look for many years. Environmentally Friendly: Wool is a renewable fiber — biodegradable and recyclable. The energy usage in producing wool is much lower than nylon or other synthetic materials, keeping the carbon footprint very low. Luxurious: Soft underfoot yet highly durable. Wool naturally repels dirt, resists stains and traps dust in its layers until vacuumed.
Q20 🛡️ Do My Rugs Need Pads Under Them?
Yes — a rug pad is highly recommended for several reasons:
  • Prevents slippage — keeps your rug safely in place
  • Acts as a buffer — minimizes abrasion between rug and floor
  • Protects your floors from scratching and discoloration
  • Provides airflow — allows the rug to breathe, extending its life
  • Prevents pile crushing after heavy use
We provide top-of-the-line non-slip rug pads, custom cut to the exact size of your rug. Our 3/8" thick pad features felt on one side and rubber on the other — among the highest quality available today.
Q21 〰️ Do All Hand-Knotted Rugs Have Fringe?
Yes — hand-knotted rugs naturally have fringes because they do not have binding on the ends. The fringes are actually the warp threads of the rug, extending beyond the pile edge. They are not sewn on like machine-made rug fringes. Fringes are made from natural fibers — mostly wool, silk, or a combination of both. These fibers have great longevity and are ideal for carpet weaving.
Q22 Do Hand-Knotted Rugs Shed?
Due to the use of quality wool, silk or the combination of both, our hand-knotted rugs do not shed. The tight knotting technique locks fibers in place, ensuring the pile remains intact even under heavy use. This is one of the key advantages of hand-knotted rugs over hand-tufted or machine-made alternatives, which can shed significantly — especially in the first months of use.
Q23 💪 Are Wool Rugs Durable?
Absolutely — wool is one of the most durable natural fibers available for rug weaving. The finer the wool fiber, the softer and more resilient it is. This is why we particularly value Peshawar Ziegler rugs — the quality of the wool fiber they produce is exceptional in both softness and durability, resulting in rugs that maintain their beauty and structure for generations.
